Most "top tips" lists for GCSE Maths repeat the same six ideas: make a timetable, do past papers, get enough sleep. None of that is wrong, but it's not what separates a student who improves a grade from one who plateaus. The tips below lean on specific exam mechanics and one genuinely striking piece of research most revision guides never mention.
AQA, Edexcel and OCR each issue a formula sheet for GCSE Maths, but it only covers a limited set of formulae, students are still expected to recall the rest from memory. Treating the formula sheet as covering "everything you need" is a common and avoidable source of lost marks. Check your specific board's current formula sheet directly and build a short memorised list of exactly what's missing from it.
This is the single most evidence-backed tip on this list, and the least followed. A randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Educational Psychology (Rohrer, Dedrick, Hartwig & Cheung, 2020) tested interleaved practice, where problem types are deliberately mixed rather than grouped, against traditional blocked practice across 54 classes over four months. On an unannounced test a month later, interleaved students scored 61% on average against 38% for blocked students, a large effect. Revising "all the fractions questions, then all the ratio questions" feels productive but builds a weaker, more artificial kind of fluency than practising mixed question sets that force you to first work out which method a question needs.
One of the three GCSE Maths papers is non-calculator, and the mental arithmetic and estimation skills it requires atrophy quickly if all your practice happens with a calculator to hand. Set aside dedicated non-calculator sessions rather than assuming general practice covers it.
GCSE Maths mark schemes award method marks for correct working even when the final answer is wrong, and accuracy marks separately. Checking only whether your final answer matches the answer key misses this entirely, and it means you can't tell whether a wrong answer lost you one mark or all of them. Mark against the real scheme, method line by method line.
A folder of finished past papers shows what you've done, not what's actually going wrong. A short log of specific errors, by question type, makes patterns visible (three separate percentage-change mistakes in a month is a pattern worth targeting directly, rather than three unconnected wrong answers).

If a capable student freezes, rushes, or avoids maths homework specifically, that's a recognised pattern researchers call maths anxiety, not a motivation problem. Naming it calmly and reducing time pressure in early practice tends to help more than generic encouragement.
