If you've searched for a "UCAS 2026 guide," there's a good chance you've landed on outdated advice without realising it. The 2026 entry deadlines closed back in January 2026. If you're applying now, you're in the 2027 entry cycle, and several important things have changed since the last round, not just the dates.
Applications for 2027 entry opened on 1 September 2026. From there, two deadlines matter, and mixing them up is one of the most common and costly mistakes applicants make. The earlier deadline, 15 October 2026 at 18:00 UK time, applies to all courses at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and to most Medicine, Dentistry, and Veterinary Medicine or Science courses at other universities. Everything else falls under the main deadline, 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time, which UCAS calls the "equal consideration" deadline, meaning every application received by then is considered on the same footing. Applications after 13 January may still be accepted if a course still has places, but without that equal consideration guarantee.
This is the part most out-of-date guides still get wrong: since the 2026 entry cycle, UCAS replaced the single free-form personal statement essay with three structured questions, and that format is still what applies for 2027 entry. The three questions are: why you want to study this course or subject, how your qualifications and studies have helped prepare you for it, and what else you've done outside of education that's relevant, and why. Each section needs a minimum of 350 characters, and the total statement is still capped at 4,000 characters, the same overall limit as before. Advice written for the old single-essay format, including guidance on a single flowing narrative arc, doesn't map cleanly onto answering three distinct questions directly, so it's worth treating this as a different task, not just a shorter version of the old one.
The fee for the 2027 cycle is a single £34.50 charge, covering up to five university or college choices, or up to six for conservatoire applications. Students who received free school meals during secondary education, or who are care leavers, may be eligible for a fee waiver, worth checking before paying if either applies.
The costliest mistake isn't lateness in general, it's not realising which deadline applies to a specific course. A student applying to Medicine at a university other than Oxford or Cambridge can easily assume the January date applies to them, when it's actually the earlier October one. The second common mistake is treating the new personal statement as one continuous essay split awkwardly into three sections, rather than answering each question on its own terms. The third is choosing courses primarily by prestige rather than checking the actual entry requirements and content of each course, which vary more between universities than school-leavers often expect.
