Merit Tutors in Plaistow: Our Newest Branch in Newham

Merit Tutors in Plaistow: Our Newest Branch in Newham Updated 06-October-2026

Merit Tutors has opened a new branch in Plaistow, joining our centres in Forest Gate and Ilford. Families across Newham now have a Merit centre within a short journey, teaching KS1 and KS2, 11 plus preparation, GCSE and A level.

Everything that works at our other branches runs here from day one. Every student starts with a free assessment. Groups are small. Teaching is matched to your child's exam board and specification, and students work through past paper questions that are marked properly.

Why We Opened in Plaistow

Private tuition is now normal in the capital. The Sutton Trust's Private Tutoring 2026 report found that 45% of London pupils had received private tutoring, against 27% across the rest of England.

Travel time is what decides whether tuition survives past January. A centre forty minutes away is one a student stops attending when the evenings get dark and mock exams arrive.

Families in the south of the borough were making that journey to reach us. Opening in Plaistow removes it.

What We Teach at the Plaistow Branch

Stage

What we cover

KS1 and KS2

Maths and English, building reading fluency, written accuracy and number confidence

11 plus

Preparation for selective entry, starting from an assessment rather than a standard workbook

GCSE

Maths, English Language and Literature, and the sciences, taught on your exam board

A level

Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Psychology, with exam technique for longer answers

Students are grouped by exam board and specification, not only by year group. AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas differ in content and paper structure. A student prepared for the wrong board has been prepared for the wrong exam.

Small Groups, Because the Evidence Supports Them

Our model is built on what raises attainment, not on what is easiest to run.

The Education Endowment Foundation reports small group tuition as delivering about four additional months' progress. That is close to the five months it reports for one to one, at a fraction of the cost to families. The EEF is also specific about what makes small groups work, stating that "once group size increases above six or seven there is a noticeable reduction in effectiveness."

We keep our Plaistow groups small for that reason. Large rooms of fifteen or twenty students are not small group tuition, whatever they are called.

Every Student Starts With a Free Assessment

We do not place a child in a group and hope it fits. Before any sessions are booked, your child completes a free assessment.

The assessment shows where the real gaps are, which is rarely where parents expect. A student losing marks in GCSE Physics usually has a maths fluency problem. A student struggling with GCSE English essays often knows the text and has never been taught to answer the command word.

It tells us which group your child belongs in, which topics to start with, and what to measure progress against. There is no charge and no obligation to book.

For Families Aiming at Selective Schools

If your child is working towards a selective place, the Redbridge 11 plus is used by Ilford County High School for Boys and Woodford County High School for Girls. Registration takes place during Year 5 for a test sat early in Year 6. The deadline falls in June, and eligibility depends on living within the common catchment area. Check the council's page each year, as the exact dates change.

Our 11 plus preparation at Plaistow starts from the assessment and is paced to the child, not to a fixed workbook schedule. Our guide on choosing the right support for your child sets out what realistic preparation looks like.

What to Ask Us on Your First Visit

Tuition centres are out-of-school settings, and parents are entitled to ask how one is run before booking. We welcome every one of these questions and will answer them in writing:

  • Our child protection and complaints policies.

  • The name of our safeguarding lead and what training they have had.

  • How we recruit staff and what checks we carry out.

  • Our maximum group size.

  • Which exam board your child will be taught.

  • What progress reporting you will receive, and how often.

A centre that hesitates over this list is telling you something. We would rather you asked.

Three Branches, One Standard

Plaistow joins Forest Gate and Ilford, and all three run the same way: assessed first, grouped by exam board, taught in small groups, with marked past paper work. Families who move between branches do not start again. Students who move up from primary to GCSE to A level stay with the same approach.

For families outside Newham, or who prefer to study at home, our online tuition follows the same model. If you are still comparing options, our guide to choosing a tuition centre in London covers what to look for.
